Logistics management of empty containers in Cyprus

Introduction and Background
Securing the return of empty containers or getting as many as possible reloaded for the return journey is a major problem for all the logistics companies. It is known that according to the economies of scale the most economical way to forward cargo is to be shipped in containers through the sea, but unfortunately world trade is not stable, and when there is no return cargo for the container, it makes it unprofitable return journey because it creates traffic congestion, carbon emission, gate delay and most importantly, increased Vehicle Miles Travelled (D.Benson, R.Bugg, G. Whitehead, 1994). Approximately 20% of the containers that are moving throughout the world are empty. Sometimes the percentage is less and sometimes is constant but the problem is still unmanageable (P.Alderton, 2008).
Aims and Objectives
This project focuses on the contemporary issue of empty containers. The aims of the project are: to understand the current logistics of the empty container and to present a review of causes of the problem and to find the efficient management strategy to reduce the problem. From these aims a number of objectives will be developed regard to the research topics:
· To identify trends related to empty containers

· To identify the most influenced sectors in shipping industry in Cyprus in relation to empty containers and examine the relationship between them

· To investigate the negative impacts of empty containers

· To assess the strategies being adopted by the logistic companies in order to minimize the adverse impacts related to the empty containers

· Analyze statistically the extent to which strategies adopted by logistic companies minimize the adverse impacts

Research Questions
This project will analyze the empty container movement problem. The research questions contain the problem investigation and co-operation prospects among stakeholders.
Methodology
The research method of this study will include primary source data, in order to test the current situation and practice, against the historical record. Survey will be conducted to gather primary source data from companies in Cyprus such as industrial representatives of ocean carriers, trucking companies, terminal operators, and freight consolidators. The survey will collect quantitative data from a random sample of companies in Cyprus. These surveys will show up several issues, including facility operations, cargo volume, the number of truck trips generated, typical business arrangements, and current and innovative business practices to improve the management of empty containers.
