In this assignment, the aim is to defend a particular claim about a certain case. Much of the process will be the same, such as the identification of the relevant broad question, the use of moral theory, and the consideration of good objections.

In general, the case study should be in the neighborhood of five to six pages. Things like grammar and spelling will be considered, but the main factor for grading will be how persuasive you are in making your case.

Case 1
Mr. Roger Chancey, an engineer for Solar Tron Microwave, discovered a flaw in the design of one of Solar Tron’s products. Mr. Chancey had good evidence that the flaw would cause harm to the buyers of the product. He went to his supervisor and told her of the flaw. She waved Mr. Chancey and his evidence away by saying, “It’s too late. The product is already on the market.” Mr. Chancey went over her head to the general manager. The general manager agreed with Mr. Chancey about the problem. He pulled the product from the market and fired Mr. Chancey’s supervisor. When Mr. Chancey was asked why he went over his supervisor’s head, Mr. Chancey responded, “I was just following the rules.” What rule was Mr. Chancey following and was it the appropriate rule?

Case 2
Jonathan Temple is hired as a floor nurse by a local hospital just after receiving his Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Jonathan loves his new job and he cannot wait to go to work every day. He is employed by the same hospital for six months before the Board of Directors authorizes a merger with another hospital. One month after the merger, Jonathan is told that he is fired. Jonathan is certainly surprised and inquires about the reasons for his termination. No one will give him an answer; no one will even say if he is being fired for doing anything wrong. Later Jonathan learns that he is one of a number of individuals fired after the merger in order to maximize efficiency and productivity of the hospital. Jonathan feels like he has been used. Did the Board of Directors follow the appropriate rule regarding employment?

Case 3
When Louis Tucker read the job description, his heart nearly skipped a beat: he was perfect for it. It called for a scholar who was qualified to teach ethics, modern philosophy, and ancient Greek philosophy. Louis was equipped to do all three because he had spent his entire graduate career doing work in all three areas. He applied for the job and received an on-campus interview. To his surprise, one of his friends, Shereen Ortez, was also invited for an on-campus interview. Shereen, an African-American female, was certainly qualified in two of the areas, but she had not done much work in ethics. Louis felt confident that this would give him the edge. A week later, however, Louis learned that Shereen was offered the job.

Case 4
“Have you said anything to your wife about this? Your decision will affect her as much as it will affect you. And what about your kids? Have you thought about how it might affect them? You may have to move. And what about your family’s needs? They’ve become accustomed to a certain kind of life. If you move ahead and blow the whistle, everything will change. You may never even work in the industry again. Think about all your education, about your plans and goals.” Douglas is trying to talk some sense into his friend, Mark, who has discovered that the managers of his company knowingly let a product on the market with a defect. The defect is beginning to hurt people, mainly children. Further, Mark has discovered that the problem could be solved with a relatively inexpensive $14 part. Since there are no government industry standards, however, the company will wait until forced by the government to attend to the defect, thinking that this is the more profitable move. Mark thinks it is his duty to bring this to the attention of the public, but Douglas knows, having seen this kind of situation before, that Mark will be fired and will almost certainly never work again as an engineer because of his reputation as a whistleblower.

Case 5
Dr. Timothy Watson always wanted to be a physician as a young intern worked hard to establish himself. He has now become quite successful, earning the respect and trust of many people in the community who rely on his expertise and professional judgment. Dr. Watson can, however, be heavy-handed at times; his primary concern is the health of his patients, and other considerations – including the wishes of the patients themselves – often take a back seat to his goal. One might say he often acts paternalistically, sizing up a patient’s medical situation and acting accordingly without fully explaining that situation to the patient. In his mind, the patient does not need to know all the details, which most patients would not understand anyway, since his role as a doctor is whole idea of informed consent is overblown, and more strongly is “just bad medicine,” since it allows patients the opportunity to choose inferior alternatives or even to refuse medical treatment altogether. Dr. Watson thinks that a three-year-old boy, who of course cannot give informed consent to anything, should be treated in one way, while the parents of the boy think he should be treated in a different way. Dr. Watson proceeds with the treatment that he believes is best for the boy.

Case 6
Terry has always been a meticulous and careful person. Her attention to detail has repeatedly impressed her family and friends. Such an orientation toward life has made Terry a very effective corporate lawyer. Unfortunately, for the first time in her life, she finds herself between a rock and a hard place. Terry received an anonymous phone call stating that one of her clients, a man she has been friends with for a long time and who owns a failing factory, plans to burn down his factory in order to gain the insurance money. In the past, he has joked with her that he wished “the damned thing would burn down and solve all his problems.” As an officer of the court, she knows that she must confront her client in order to stop him, but she doesn’t know how. On one hand, she knows that if she expresses to her client the limits of her confidentiality, the client will not be honest with her. On the other hand, if she does not express the limits on her confidentiality, the client may confess and she will be required to break confidence with him and turn him in. Neither prospect seems ethically acceptable to her, so in the end, she confronts the client without disclosing the limits on her confidentiality.

Case 7
Having your work recognized by your peers is gratifying. Stacey Harding knows this all too well. She has been writing a column in a major newspaper for several years. Recently her views on social and political issues have become the focus of many interest groups, and she has consequently accept invitations for a few speaking engagements. While the attention has been flattering, the honoraria have been even more satisfying. Additionally, her associates and superiors have been supportive in many ways. When the speaking engagements have taken her away from her column, coworkers have pitched in to cover some of her responsibilities. Recently, however, the newspaper’s board of directors has become concerned with her receiving of honoraria. Although the board is proud of her accomplishments, it worries that receiving such gifts might be a conflict of interest and, in any case, will give the appearance of impropriety. The board recommends that Stacey either stop receiving such gifts or stop writing her column. Stacey feels that such a request violates her rights and refuses to stop either.
