Description
Module Five, the final instructional module of the course, consists of a five-page argumentative paper that includes research. The outline, notes, Works Cited, and drafts are individual lead-up drafts that must show one side clearly, address the concerns of the opposition, and effectively refute them in argumentative form. The paper addresses all six competencies for the class:
1. Generate writing as an active process, using planning, drafting, revising, and editing.
2. Evaluate strategies and approaches for organizing content.
3. Examine college-level reading skills as an active part of the writing process.
4. Synthesize research resources appropriate to the task and context.
5. Integrate standard college-level documentation practices.
6. Adapt to the rules of Standard English grammar appropriate to context
Outline, Note Cards, and Works Cited Assignment
For this assignment, students will gather the resources (books, video, and periodical articles) to use in the paper and incorporate them into an outline, note cards, and Works Cited page. The section of the sample outline, note, and Works Cited entry for a book below guide students through what to write and include in each section of the assignment.
Overview of the Notes
Since the majority of the paper consists of the student’s writing, the note cards should reflect the writer’s ideas about the quotes through paraphrase and analysis. Note cards allow the writer to isolate the quote and paraphrase without having to look at multiple pages of information to determine whether he or she has borrowed any words from the original quote.
• The subject of the note records where the note fits in the outline, including the numbers and letters and the topics addressed in that section of the outline.
• Direct quotes must have quotation marks around that word-for-word information as well as a (parenthetical citation) – (Last Name page number) after the quote and before the final period.
• Paraphrase means to place the original quote in your own words. After the paraphrased material, the writer places a (parenthetical citation) at the end of the paraphrased material and before the analysis. (See the Paraphrasing Exercise for details about paraphrasing.)
• The analysis contains the application of the material, which could include the ideas the writer considers as he or she is recording the quote or what made the passage quote-worthy. Three to five sentences of analysis must be written for every note. Analysis asks why, how, and how is this significant about the information contained in the quote. Additional information to help students analyze is offered in the “Taking Notes and Analyzing Research” video in Blackboard.
• Works Cited entries are recorded on the Works Cited page to show what resources have been cited in the notes.
Sample Section of an Outline
IV. Many citizens declare equal rights for all Americans.
A. The intention of the Constitution in its “We the People” statement is to include equal rights for all who live in the United States—citizens and statesmen (Messer-Kruse, preamble).
B. The Founding Fathers did not exclude any human being from having the right to vote.
1. Susan B. Anthony uses wise words to make the problem well known: “It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union” (Anthony 127).
a. Although mankind and other masculine nouns are used in the primary documents of the nation, the intent can be interpreted as mankind including human kind, meaning all genders, nationalities, and people.
b. America earned independence but not for all people in America.
i. The Civil War awarded black men and women freedom but did not award the right to vote, and those rights were eliminated as fast as the governments in the states could create segregation laws.
ii. Black and white women had to fight another separate battle in the twentieth century to gain the right to vote.
iii. Blacks of both genders had to fight, again, to confirm their right to vote in the mid-twentieth century.
iv. When will the definition of people ever change to mean all people?
2. When the government and the citizens under-interpret laws, the ideal is taken away and left to righted years later.
3. Democracy’s intent is not one of exclusion but one of inclusion.
