Ryan’s Case Study
Directions: Use the information contained in the case study below to complete the Application of Theories Paper.
Ryan is a 25-year-old male. He currently identifies as a heroin addict. He reports that he first began to use substances at the age of 12. According to his own history, Ryan reports that his parents divorced “right around that same time.” Ryan reports that he drank alcohol and smoked marijuana at the age of 12, but wants you to know that he never had a problem with those substances. Ryan indicates that he smoked marijuana more and more regularly, and by the age of 15 he was smoking marijuana on a daily basis.
Ryan reports that between the ages of 15 and 18 he began to experiment with a multitude of other drugs, primarily in a social setting. The list of drugs he experimented with include the following: Coricidin Cough & Cold (Triple C), Robitussin, cocaine, “spice,” LSD, Mushrooms, Ecstasy, 2-CE, 2-CB, mescalin, DMT, Methamphetamine, Xanax, and “Bath Salts.” Patient believes that he abused Triple C (which he took repeatedly over the course of three months), Ecstasy (which he took repeatedly over the course of one year), Xanax (which he indicates he has used regularly over the past five years) and opiates, which he reports is his primary drug of choice.
Ryan reports that he began to use Oxycontin and Percocet at the age of 20; he began by ingesting the drug, and then eventually learned to smoke the pills. Ryan eventually found that he could not financially afford his pills and discovered that black tar heroin was much less expensive. Ryan began by smoking the heroin and progressed to intravenous heroin use. Ryan reports that he has been injecting heroin at least two to three times daily for the past three years.
Ryan reports that he has attempted sobriety before on his own and has participated in various levels of treatment (detoxification, residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and individual therapy). Ryan states, “I was clean off heroin for six months one time” but has not remained abstinent from all chemicals for more than two weeks outside of treatment since the age of 15.
Ryan’s primary means of funding his drug use has been dealing drugs, stealing/pawning things, and shoplifting. Ryan states that he has been dealing drugs since 17 or 18 and began with dealing marijuana. Ryan indicates that he was making good money dealing drugs until about the age of 22 when he reports that all of his money started to go to opiate use. Ryan reports that eventually his dealing became about getting his drugs free and supporting his habit.
Ryan reports that he has a girlfriend who went into treatment one week prior to appearing for this session. Ryan reports that he has been supplying both of them with heroin and she has been helping him with rent by working as a server at a restaurant.
Ryan reports that the consequences of his drug use have included the following: loss of trust with his family (he is not welcome in his parents’ home although he indicates they are supportive of his choice to seek help); loss of relationships with healthy sober people (he reports that all of the
people he knows use drugs); loss of jobs, possessions, and money; and he reports that he has been homeless and he has pending legal issues. Patient reports that he is facing a DWI charge and is also facing charges for possession with intent to sell. Ryan reports that he does not want to go to jail and that is why he is seeking help.
