Argumentative Essay: Bitcoins
Format MLA
Volume of 1100 – 1200 words (5 pages)
Assignment type : Essay
Whether you are reviewing a classmate’s essay or your own, keep in mind the following criteria:
–Length: 1200 words, plus a bibliography of five or more sources;
–Style Requirement: italicize one each of the four sentence types we have worked with for the semester; in addition in each body paragraph use and italicize one or more of each of the following template phrases—‘They Say,’ ‘I Say,’ and ‘Tying it Together’ (Coherence Strategies); also use two or more general ‘They Say’ phrases for your introduction (consider using one of the extended templates for introduction listed in the ‘The Say’ section).
I. Introductory Paragraph: Briefly introduce and explain the subject of your paper, establish the basic pro(s) and con(s) that have arisen concerning this subject, and then conclude by offering a thesis statement (agree, disagree, qualify) identifying your position.
II. Body Paragraphs: Compose paragraphs that advance your position through reasoning and evidence. Keep in mind:
a) One Point/How Many Paragraphs?: Typically devote a full paragraph to a single supporting reason for your argument.
b) Types of Evidence: while you may draw upon your personal experience as well as your own general knowledge of American society today, you should be sure to integrate relevant quotes and ideas from the source set, one or two paragraph. Keep in mind: you can also search and find a new source or two while you are in the middle of the drafting process, especially as your thought process and perspective on your issue deepens.
c) Choosing Quotations: There is no exact number in terms of how many quotations to use for your essay. It might be the case that in one paragraph you need only one quote from a single source to develop and support your argument, while for another paragraph you may need more than one quote (and source) to develop and support your claim.
d) Integrating Quotations: as you integrate the ideas and words of others into your argument keep in mind the three-part model of the “quotation sandwich:” introduce the quote, cite the quote, and then (in a separate sentence) co0mment upon it.
e) Building Your Argument: Remember that your goal is always to make a carefully qualified argument that responds effectively to the objections of others and makes clear your argument’s significance.
f) Counterarguments: remember that when you bring the view of those who oppose your own viewpoint into the argument you may do so to either concede the point, challenge the point, or perhaps articulate a middle position (concede partly/challenge partly). Consider both developing a full paragraph (or paragraphs) focused upon opposing positions early on as well as creating paragraphs that include source material and ideas from both sides, synthesizing these viewpoints by playing them off of one another.
g) Organization and Coherence: You should organize your points in what you believe is the most effective sequence, and you should strengthen the connection between them (during drafting and revising) through cohesion terms identified on the transition handout.
III. Conclusion: Provide a full paragraph that draws together the various elements of your argument into a concluding summation of your position on this issue.
IV. Works Cited Page: Use MLA Format: refer to either our Hacker textbook (or an online source such as the Purdue OWL) to determine basic bibliographical format.
Five Questions to Consider once You Complete Your Draft and Begin to Revise:
1) Does your introduction have BALANCE by introducing both sides and explaining the ongoing issue?
2) Do your body paragraphs have enough CONCRETE BITE by integrating specific examples and quotes into the discussion?
3) Do you genuinely engage the other side by COUNTERARGUING regularly in your body paragraphs?
4) Have you stitched together the various parts of your argument, creating COHERENCE by employing transitional phrases between sentences when needed?
5) Have you QUALIFIED your argument by recognizing the complexity of it, make distinctions and concessions when needed?
