 Case study – Baxter Books. Your work should be in the form of a report to the owner of Baxter Books 1600 words which:
 Describes the scope of your TNA
 Describes and justifies the methods you chose to identify training needs
 Presents the findings of the TNA

 Shows how the training needs you identified link to organisational aims and the training cycle

 Describes how government initiatives may help the organisation to meet its training needs

Describe the scope of the TNA

 In describing the scope of your TNA, you will need to provide a brief description of the organisational objectives / strategic aims of Baxter Books.
 It is these objectives / aims that your TNA needs to support.
 You can demonstrate this by clearly stating the aims / objectives of Baxter Books at the start of your report.

Describe and justify the method you chose

 You may use some or all of the information provided in the case study. What you use, and how you use it is up to you. For example, you may choose to look at the learning needs identified in staff appraisals and then prioritise them in accordance with the organisational objectives of Baxter Books.
 You must describe what you have done (your method/s) and then explain the advantages and disadvantages of your method/s.
Show how the training needs you identified
link to organisational aims and the training cycle

 The training needs you identify must have a link to the organisational objectives of Baxter Books. You must make this link clear. The table format used in the previous slide achieves this.
 You needs to demonstrate that you understand the importance of TNA as the first stage in the Training Cycle. – ie if the TNA is not carried out properly, any training carried out will not have the desired outcome.
 You can write a brief paragraph to cover this at the start of your report – just before you go on to explain the TNA methods you used.

Show how your TNA complies with
the DPA
 You need to demonstrate an understanding of the Data Protection Act. You need to show that you understand the issues of gaining access to personal data, for example the data included in the staff appraisals.
 An example of how you can cover this is by saying in your report that the employees of Baxter Books gave permission for information they gave in staff appraisals to be used to identify training needs.

Show how you have considered a range
of options to meet the training needs, including S/NVQs and customised training

 You will need to describe at least 3 options you have considered and justify your final choice. eg. –don’t just say that you’d deliver customer service through in-house training – you’ll need to discuss two other options you considered for customer service training, and justify your final choice.
 If you present your findings in a table format, your recommended option will appear there. However, you will still need to show that other options are available. You could include this in a paragraph to follow the table.

Show how you have considered a range
of options to meet the training needs, including S/NVQs and customised training

 S/NVQs/ Apprenticeships, etc. – you’ll need to describe the features, advantages and disadvantages of these in relation to the case study. Find out if S/NVQs are available in the topics you have identified. Would you recommend an S/NVQ to meet training needs at Baxter Books? Why? (or why not?)
 Customised training – again, you’ll need to discuss the features, advantages and disadvantages in relation to the case study. ‘Customised training’ is training that has been specifically designed for that organisation. Is it a viable option for Baxter Books?

Describe how government initiatives may help the organisation to meet its training needs

 You will need to provide a brief outline of key current government initiatives such as Skill seekers, Modern Apprenticeships, and any other government funded / promoted / supported initiatives.
 Explain how Baxter Books might use these opportunities. For example, staff could get funding to complete an SVQ as part of a Modern Apprenticeship scheme.
 Look at the websites listed in last week’s session, and do some investigation and research of your own.
