Clinical Application of the Evidence Based Practice
Individual position statement Introduction Shared decision making also comes in handy in the process of the evidence based practice since it challenges the nurses to delve into the patients’ perspective and gives them an upper hand regarding what they should do best to deliver the best of healthcare services to the patients in question. It is essentially the nexus of the communication and evidence based skills that play a major role in making the process a success at the end of the day. Factually, following Kathleen (2013), the essence of the Evidence based practice is that it should be in alignment with the research carried out so that it remains relevant all through the studies and the practicing phase in order to provide positive and factual outcomes in the long run. Standard 3:3.5 of the Registered nurse standards for practice provides that it the Registered nurse should seek and responds to practice and feedback. The feedback may stem from the patients or from the leadership in the organizational in the medical context and is usually very important. In a clinical setting, Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is certainly inherent as it gives nurses in practice an upper hand when it comes to undertaking their responsibilities, making clinical operations run more efficiently. Incorporating the best available evidence, new findings from extensive research, clinical experiences and patient preferences do a great deal in opening up the nurses to a whole new level of new possibilities and innovation to make their practice better. This paper details this position in a three-fold perspective.
First, it unravels how the evidence based practice improves patient outcomes. Secondly, it uncovers how the practice can be theoretically and clinically applied and finally, provides a concrete position whether it is feasible to uphold the expectation that Registered Nurses (RN’s) can work towards the implementation of the Evidence Based Practice in the nursing field without prior training. It is also inclusive of opposing arguments with regard to the subject before the final position. This is in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.
How Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Improves Patient Outcomes
It is certainly logical that Evidence Based Practice improves patient outcomes a great deal. This underpins that nurses have to do their very best to undertake their duties to their very best in order to gain as they should, to their fullest. Evidence based practice is highly essential to improve healthcare standards of nurses and healthcare systems in general. To begin with, the patients go ahead to demonstrate a positive outcome with regard to the healthcare services they will receive and they will not at all have to struggle reaching out for great healthcare services. Additionally, with more evidence practice in demand, the need for more educated nurses will follow. Also, evidence based practice translates medical research into practice, which is certainly important.(Jacqueline,2016)
Shaleen (2011) provides that nurses demonstrate a positive attitude with regard to the Evidence based practice since it does plays a major role in contributing to the delivery of quality healthcare to the patients involved. However, one negative aspect with the nurses with the nurses is that they could not cope with the heavy workload of the training with regard to the Evidence based practice and therefore some of them opted to quit the pursuit. However, they expressed that with consistent practice, they would easily pursue the practice to completion.
Experience also does count a great deal with regard to making the nurses profession easy to handle. Some of the practical aspects set in with regard to the evidence based practice with regard to the nursing practice include factors such as workforce shortages, lack of sufficient policies, or lack of resources to run the institutions in question. This therefore underpins that such critical factors are important since they define the growth of the practice of the nurses. Standard 1:1.2 of The Registered Nurse Standards for Practice that the registered nurse should develop practice through reflection on experiences, Knowledge actions ,feelings and beliefs to identify how these shape practice. This emphasizes the significant underpinning of the essence of experience and knowledge in incorporating the Evidence Based Practice in nursing.
Application of Evidence Based Practice Theoretically and Clinically
The application of the Evidence Based Practice should not only be limited to the theoretical dimension, but traverse over to the clinical dimension where it will thrive owing to the fact that the clinical aspect is practical in its entirety. Following Anne (2006), theoretical intervention is indispensable with regard to the clinical perspective. Since it is linked back to the strategy it introduces in the medical practice, this definitely underpins that it is highly important. Before the practical aspect comes into play, the theoretical aspect is greatly considered, which is hugely important and should be considered. For instance, a new theory on how to treat a certain disease may be introduced and followed to the end, to breed success. However, according to Valerie(2017), there are some barriers that were observed in accordance with extensive research conducted with regard to the use of clinical evidence in the nursing practice.Out of the 37 individuals included in the research process, it was concluded that some of the major barriers include lack of knowledge and skills for Evidence Based Practice in Students and Faculty as well as lack of support and negative attitude.
Jackie (2000) provides that overreliance on empirical information may be quite is not fully satisfactory since theory informs the practical aspect of the medical circles. For that reason, it is important to consider the importance of the theoretical aspect since it usually comes prior to the practical aspect in the clinical endeavors and should therefore be highly considered. Basically, the Evidence Based Practice serves the significant role of providing the nurses with the requisite knowledge from the research conducted to carry out their responsibilities effectively without fail. The Evidence Based Practice integrates the long-term practice with the research to have a conclusive finding that will better the healthcare systems, which is highly necessary in the nursing practice (Kathleen, 2013)
However, as per Surlock(2014), some of the main limitations of Evidence Based Practice include less available timeframe ,skills or the negative misconceptions of evidence based practice. This was following a study conducted among psychotherapists in practice.
Clinical Application of the Evidence Based Practice
According to Mary (2017), Evidence Based Practice may be described as a problem solving approach that informs clinical decision making, thanks to the research evidence put in place. Evidence Based Practice prompts healthcare practitioners to do their very best since it challenges them to keep up with the fact that they should deliver the best of healthcare services to their patients, which is a certain requirement. This goes hand in hand with Standard 3:3.4 of the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice which provides that the registered Nurse accepts accountability for decisions, actions, behaviors and responsibilities inherent in their role, and for the actions of others to whom they have delegated responsibilities.
The clinical aspect of the medical practice is highly essential since most of the practice evidence heavily relies on clinical research to arrive at logical conclusion. However, one challenge that faces such clinical researchers is the time and costs which is highly challenging for the researchers to handle easily. (Kenneth, 2002)
The Essence of Training with Regard to the Implementation of Evidence Based Practice
In matters implementation of the Evidence Based Practice with regard to the nursing practice, the fact that some professionals may register inconsistencies or high-level unprofessionalism cannot at all be ignored. Training is therefore important to enable such nurses to develop their research as well as practical skills in their various fields so they may be able to the most use out of the evidence based research in their practice. Obviously, the ultimate goal on the other end of the spectrum that is always considered and can never be overlooked is the patient who should receive commendable healthcare services and this owes to the feedback that they give following the services offered. For that reason, in order to boost the delivery of the healthcare providers, it is necessary to expose the nurses in practice to good training so that they may learn to develop their skills and become proficient at whatever it is they do. (Black, 2015)
Rinad (2010) expresses that in as much as training is important when it comes to the implementation of the Evidence Based Practice in the Nursing Practice; a Systems Contextual Perspective is more effective since the approach infuses the necessary skills to the nurses learning since it is more particular and therefore effective. Whether it is the student or any other professional delegated, they should be all accountable to the Registered Nurse at the end of it all. Additionally, the client outcome is also in alignment with the client training that was offered in the first place.
Moreover, training not only plays the major role of bettering the patient outcomes but also plays the key role of enhancing the research skills of the Nurses in Practice and therefore increases their competency in the long run. With the excellent levels in clinical research, the nurses in practice can give their very best in the profession, doubtless that the patients will give a negative feedback regarding the kind of services they offer.Following Janine(2014),a research conducted in Manilla among health professionals proved that the training does a great deal in improving the capacity of the medical practitioners in their services. The Evidence Based Practice Training is certainly an important problem solving approach with regard to elevating the proficiency of the medical practitioners. (Agnes, 2014)
In conclusion, it is certainly evident that the Evidence Based Practice is definitely important when it comes to the growth of the healthcare systems. For that reason, the health practitioners should take into account the most important factors which include the best available evidence, research findings, customer preferences and the clinical experiences of the nurses in practice.
