Causes of Japanese overfishing of Bluefin tuna
Research concepts
Overfishing can be viewed as a dangerous practice as well as an advantage to the fishers. The high rate of fishing in Japan region has had the driving force that sustains the motivation in fishers. Bluefin tuna species are among the most successful inhabitants in the ocean by nature as it has fewer predators and is also at the top of the food chain. The value that the Sushi devotees have tagged on this species has led to the hunting by the fishers to the extent that they will become extinct. The research, therefore, seeks to find what reason there is that makes the fish so vital that it has been given such a high value (Madigan, 2017). The Sushi people in Japan have seen something that is very different from the other types of fish that helps them to appreciate Bluefin tuna profoundly.
In the general notion of traditional fishers, it is said that the fisheries cannot experience such a high level of fishing the young ones and continue on hunting the same species. It has been different in Japan in the present times as the fishers have gone fishing for the same species due to its value in the society and thus leading to dangerous times when they will no longer exist in the ocean.
The Bluefin tuna fish are said to have fatty flesh and thus sold at a higher cost than the other species across Asia and some of the Western restaurants in the high-end. If the current trend keeps on track, the species will only be remaining in the warehouses and functionally become extinct in the Pacific Ocean. The fishing methods that are being applied to the ground have posed a danger to the fishing in the future. The purported fishing methods may affect the fish reproductively as they are scientifically classified to take about four to eight years (Madigan, 2017). Therefore, the understanding of these causes will help the society to regulate and save the species from being extinct in the water habitats to serve the value for a long time.
Methodology
The research will use the case study method where the researcher will understand the causes of overfishing in Japan and propose the amendments that can be used to help regulate the fishing practices in the region. Data collection from the fishery industries will use interviews to help get information for these causes as well as the modern fishing techniques that are being applied in the fishery industry. It will help the researcher to analyze the methods of fishing and propose the best for the current situation facing the Bluefin fish (Taylor, 2015).
Publication summaries
1. All at sea: Lack of regulations hurting tuna stocks
Rob Gilhooly (2016) states that there has been more than the expected rates of fishing since 2002. Bluefin tuna market has been overrated, and this has brought danger to the fish as they are in the process of being extinct. The harvest has been reducing from time to time as the trend has taken the path to downfall. He states that the weight that the industry produces every time of harvest is declining as he says in 2005 one could bring 358 tons of Bluefin, but in 2014 only 23 tons were available. Therefore, this shows a drastic fall in the product which is a more significant percentage.
The regulations set by the Ministry of Agriculture in Japan proposed that they will have to cut the fishing by half, but still, this did not help so they opted to adopt the US proposal which would reduce to zero. It was in 2012 that the need to regulate the fishing was viewed as more important. Research carried by the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries showed that in the 19th century the catch was more than 85,000 tons and this happened in 1939. Though some strategies were being put in place for the fishery industry in Japan they did not take it seriously as the country does not accept their failure and thus the fishing continues leading to deterioration of the Bluefin population. The major problem remains as there is worry of having Bluefin species coming to an end before 2020 (Rob Gilhooly, 2016).
2. Japanese Culture and Society
Japan is a country that is located close to the Pacific Ocean where all the resources that are in the maritime are accessible. The accessibility of these resources provides a conducive platform for fishing. In the sea, some currents flow along the coastal peripheries of Japan and a diversity of climatic conditions that makes the aquatic environments very productive fishing region in the world. There is a lot of more favorable conditions for the growth as well as productivity of fish. The currents are a mixture of cold and warm which leads to the proliferation of fishing grounds in Japan. The conditions help in the growth of fish that includes the tuna and the dolphins which increased at a very high rate in the earlier days and intrigued the development and growth of fishing industry in Japan (Victoria, 2011).
Bluefin tuna is a species of fish that is found in the Pacific Ocean, and therefore the fishing of these types of fish has been elevated over the usual standards. The overfishing practice has endangered the population of these fish which poses a misfortune of being priced higher by the Japanese Sushi lovers. The decline in the stock of these fish is approximated to be about 96%. It is proposed that the species might become extinct as most of the fished specimens are young and have not reproduced yet (Victoria, 2011). Therefore, the need to understand the causes of overfishing in Japan is the question of contention.
