Western music history essay
Assignment type : Essay Volume of 5 pages (1375 words) Instruction Your first paper is a study of the Baroque lament. Your first task is to familiarize yourself with the laments in the anthology (Orfeo’s, p. 267; the Carissimi, p. 316; the Strozzi, p. 322; and the Purcell, p. 374). Then, familiarize yourself with two additional laments from Blackboard: “Ah! Mio cor” from Handel’s Alcina, and “Let me Weep” from Purcell’s Faerie Queen. Finally, consider two famous—and famously moving—Baroque arias that are not laments: “Verdi prati,” also from Alcina, and “As with rosy steps,” from Handel’s Theodora. Then choose at least one of the laments from anthology and at least one of other laments, and think about how they’re constructed: how is the text set? what form(s) are they in? are there madrigalisms? do they provide a platform for the performer to “emote,” or is the emotional effect built into the music itself? what is the relationship between the vocal material and the accompaniment? You should address at least three laments, so either two from the anthology or both the additional ones on Blackboard. You’ll then compare what you’ve learned about the lament to at least one of the two Handel non-lament arias on Blackboard. As yourself the same questions as those above for the lament. Do you see a significant difference in how these arias function or are constructed? Are they more moving than the laments? less so? just different? To reiterate: your paper needs to address at least three laments, including at least one from the anthology and at least one of the additional ones on Blackboard. It also needs to address at least one of the touching-but-not-lament arias on Blackboard. The non-classical lament is optional. Your paper should be 5 pages. All work should be composed in Times New Roman, 12 point, with double spacing and normal margins.
